2001 J/105, and another 2001 J/105 Pre-Purchase Surveys
Every so often, J Boats really nails a design. They are very good at taking a sexy concept and making it usable for amateur sailors/racers. The J/105 is the mid-sized, easy to sail, sport boat for the rest of us. It shamelessly gives up headroom and cruising amenities to absolutely nail its suitability for day sailing and day racing. Large cockpit, small jib, sexy asymmetrical chute, - no wonder they sold so many . . .
The boats hold up well, especially those that were built with the SCRIMP infusion process (the class site claims all boats after #155 were SCRIMP'ed). However, there is a common gel coat crazing problem on boats built around 2001, and it's good to check the emergency tillers - the original collar at the top of the rudder stock expands and it's common for the tiller not to fit the stock (ouch!).
